As his time as Mayor comes to a close, Neil Maher reflects on a busy year representing Westhoughton, from driving ambulances to Ukraine to raising more than £4,300 for local causes.

How does it feel to have finished your term as Mayor of Westhoughton?

"Overall, it's been very enjoyable. I’ve learnt a lot about the many varied groups we have in the town and the wonderful people behind each. This is the part I’ll miss the most. I feel privileged to have served as Mayor—and my wife Linda, the Mayoress, and I now have many joyful memories from our time in office."

When you look back on your year in office, what moments stand out the most?

"There are lots. A few that stand out: the town Christmas event and switching on the new lights, signing the Armed Forces Covenant, the 80th Anniversary VE Day event, the Remembrance Service, supporting my three chosen charities, driving ambulances to Poland for Ukraine, and presenting the Freedom of Westhoughton to the Houghton Weavers."

"The 80th Anniversary of VE Day event was especially memorable. It was very well attended, and the fantastic family and community feel that day really stood out."

You’ve raised £4,300 for three local organisations—can you tell us why you chose those causes?

"Each has a personal connection for me.

Senior Solutions—after my father passed away, my mother lived alone, and I remember how much she looked forward to her weekly visit to the senior social group.

Westhoughton Assist—I grew up in the days before these kinds of organisations existed, and I know what it’s like to struggle to put food on the table.

The Darren Deady Foundation—a veteran of 22 years who suffers with PTSD after serving in the Falklands. That says it all. Each of these charities holds personal value for me."

What’s something people might not realise about the role of Mayor?

"Most people see the Mayor at events, wearing the chains of office. But the Mayor is also the Chair of the Town Council—and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes."

Any final message for the people of Westhoughton?

"Thank you—thank you for allowing me to be the Mayor of our town. We have a great town, something even endorsed in a recent national poll, and it’s all down to you. Thank you."
