Plans have been submitted for three new sculptures on the grass verge along Cricketer’s Way, just past Sainsbury’s, celebrating Westhoughton’s history and identity.
The proposed artworks include a cricket bat and wicket, marking the site of the old Westhoughton Cricket Club which once stood where Sainsbury’s now operates; a cow sculpture, reflecting the well-known symbol from local folklore; and a greyhound, representing the town’s former greyhound track at Hart Common, now replaced by the Hewlett Way housing development.
All three statues are to be funded through Section 106 contributions — money set aside by developers of the Sainsbury’s supermarket and the Hewlett Way estate to benefit the local community.
