The rerouting of the A6 near Wingates is nearing completion, marking a major milestone in a development expected to bring thousands of new jobs to Westhoughton.

Westhoughton town councillors visited the site yesterday for an update on the scheme, which is being led by Harworth Group with groundworks carried out by local contractor AE Yates Ltd. Councillors were shown plans for the finished layout and taken on a tour to see the scale of the work already completed.

One of the most significant changes is the new section of the A6, which has been moved slightly away from Bluebell Cottages. The old stretch of road in front of the houses is being turned into a cul-de-sac, with fresh tarmac, improved pavements and landscaping now underway.

Residents are expected to benefit from reduced noise and traffic outside their homes, with the former main road becoming a quiet residential street.

New pedestrian crossings are being created and bus stops will be reinstated, with all work on this section expected to finish by mid-June.
