A celebration of Walt Whitman: Bolton’s transatlantic treasure trove

Ten rare items, some never shown before, will be on display as Whitman expert Dr Karen Karbiener visits Bolton.

Bolton Central Library will open its doors to poetry lovers on Saturday 31 May for a special event exploring the town’s unique connection to American poet Walt Whitman.

The event, running from 11am to 12pm in the library’s Lecture Theatre, will be led by internationally renowned Whitman scholar Dr Karen Karbiener, currently the 2025 Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professor at the University of Manchester. Attendees will be treated to the fascinating story of how Bolton came to possess one of the most significant Whitman collections outside the United States.
